How to Choose a Data Center for Your Workloads

Key criteria: location, tier certification, connectivity, security, and compliance.

Back to blog

Choosing a data center affects latency, compliance, and resilience. Use clear criteria so you pick a facility that fits your workloads and regulations.

Location and latency

  • Choose a location that minimizes latency for your users or partners.
  • Respect data residency rules (e.g. GDPR, local regulations) when required.
  • For global apps, consider multiple regions or a provider with a strong backbone.

Tier and infrastructure

  • Tier III or IV certification indicates redundant power and cooling and concurrent maintainability.
  • Check for multiple carriers and peering so you are not dependent on a single path.
  • Ask about backup power (UPS, generators) and cooling design.

Security and compliance

  • Confirm physical security (access control, CCTV, logs).
  • If you need it, verify compliance (ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI-DSS, etc.) and audit support.
  • Review the provider’s incident and change management practices.

Summary

Prioritize location and latency, tier certification, connectivity diversity, and compliance. Visit or audit the site when the workload is critical.
