Windows Server Licensing in the Cloud

BYOL, SPLA, and provider-included licensing options.

Back to blog

Bring your own license (BYOL) or use provider SPLA; check which editions and cores are supported. Licensing can be a significant cost; factor it into total cost of ownership when comparing Linux and Windows.

BYOL (Bring Your Own License)

  • You own the Windows Server license (e.g. through volume agreement) and apply it to the VM or dedicated server in the cloud.
  • Check compatibility: Not all providers or instance types support BYOL; some only offer SPLA or included. Verify edition (Standard, Datacenter) and core count.
  • Mobility: Some agreements allow moving licenses between on-prem and cloud; check your contract.

SPLA (Service Provider License Agreement)

  • Provider licenses Windows and you pay a monthly (or similar) fee as part of the server cost. No upfront license purchase.
  • Simpler: No need to manage license keys or true-ups. Provider handles compliance.
  • Cost: Can be higher over time than BYOL if you have long-term, steady use. Compare TCO.

Provider-included

  • License included in the instance price. Common for some VPS and managed Windows offerings. Easiest; just pay the server price.
  • Limits: May be specific editions or use rights; read the provider’s terms.

Summary

Choose BYOL, SPLA, or included based on your existing licenses and TCO. Check supported editions and cores. Factor licensing into cost when comparing Windows and Linux hosting.
